CHARLES CITY, Iowa – Two counties are working toward an agreement on sharing a jail.
Last year, an inspector said the Floyd County Jail was old and not suitable.
Because of worries about liability in case someone gets hurt, the sheriff and board of supervisors are working on sending inmates to Mitchell County starting in July.
But that’s raising costs and questions about insurance.
“If I can save five employees’ job, obviously, I don’t want to have people laid off and if I don’t have that liability or I’m going to be insured on that deficiency that we had I’m fine with that,” said Sheriff Rick Lynch with Floyd County.
The Floyd County Supervisors are expected to have more information on the plan in the next two months.
