Road collapses after garbage truck drives over

Street Collapse

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Some Albert Lea residents were evacuated from their homes after part of their street collapsed.

Authorities were called to the scene on East Fifth Street around 10 a.m. It happened after a garbage truck was driving through and the road caved in.

The truck did not fall in, but the concrete from the road caused a gas line to break. Water and sewer lines from one of the homes were impacted as well.

“We had Alliant here shutting off the gas and the city’s been working on repairing the water and the sewer service all day,” said Albert Lea City Engineer Steven Jahnke.

Crews were filling the whole back in with dirt Tuesday afternoon. Jahnke hopes to have everything back up and running Tuesday night or by the morning.

No one was hurt.
