Woman given probation after she tampered with records

Courthouse Mason City, IA

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A 34-year-old North Liberty woman has been given one year of probation after reaching a plea agreement on allegations of tampering with business records.

Melissa Frost entered Alford pleas on two counts of tampering with records, in which she didn’t admit guilt but that prosecutors may have been able to convict her.

Her attorney Laura Bergus says Frost received deferred judgments, which means the pleas will not become convictions if she fulfills the terms of her self-supervised probation.

Prosecutors alleged Frost altered the records of C & M Tax Service LLC, a company in which she had an ownership interest.

They dropped 11 other counts, including allegations that Frost used money from a business savings account to cover $22,000 in personal credit card bills. Frost isn’t required to pay restitution.
