How to handle family pets during a house fire

Earlier this week we told you about a house fire in Freeborn County that claimed the life of a family dog inside the home.

Many wonder what they would do in a situation where their home was on fire and family pets were inside.

We spoke with the Albert Lea Fire Department who said they do make an effort to get pets out of the home but say your first priority is to get you and your family safe.

“We know they’re important to people or they wouldn’t have them so but as far as going back in or trying to make sure that they’re out, no that’s the last thing that you want to do, it’s your safety and your families safety is the most important thing,” says Capt. Mark Light.

According to the Albert Lea Fire Department they do have specially designed oxygen masks that they use to help pets that have been rescued from burning homes.
