Mountain lion attack feared

Minnesota DNR

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Authorities are investigating a possible mountain lion attack in northeast Rochester.  The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office was notified Saturday at around 5:30 pm that a Great Dane was found dead with claw and bite marks on its body.  The dog’s body was in the backyard of a home in the 5800 block of Highway 63 north.  The incident has been reported to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and a search is being conducted.  Don Nelson with the DNR says neighbors think it was a mountain lion but no sign of such an animal has been found in the area and he says he is unaware of any mountain lion attack like this anywhere in the state.  Nelson says they may deploy trail cameras to identify the suspected animal attacker.  Sergeant Tom Claymon of the Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to be aware and report any large animal they see.
