HAMPTON, Iowa – He was a man who helped shape the 20th century.
And one local community is celebrating his legacy.
Admiral William D. Leahy was born in Hampton.
The Franklin County Historical Museum is showing off a new exhibit dedicated to Leahy.
He was the first five star commanders in the military and served as the Governor of Puerto Rico at one point.
“Oh its wonderful, I mean tonight we’ve had at least three people that served on the ship, one person that was baptize using the ships bell is here tonight,” said Steve Deike, a chairperson with the Admiral Leahy Memorial.
Deike says the exhibit includes the desk Leahy used at the white house, a model of the U.S.S. Leahy naval ship, and photos.
