MASON CITY, Iowa – If your looking for a new home and you’d like it to be smoke-free, we’ve got the answer for you.
A new statewide registry is now available for homeowners to log on and find out which properties are smoke-free.
In Cerro Gordo County, Huntley Properties in Mason City is among the newest additions to the website.
Those with the county’s Department of Public Health say that this can be an invaluable tool for families trying to avoid second and third-hand smoke.
“You go to this listing, this registry and you can look it’s listed by town. So if you’re moving or someone is moving to the area, and they know what town they are looking for, they can just look up Mason city or Clear Lake,” said Penny McCaslin, Tobacco Program Coordinator with the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health.
A study from the Environmental Energy Divisions shows that toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke can form harmful chemicals that can make it’s way from carpet back into the air.
“They are supporting the health of their community. They want healthy lifestyles for the people that they rent to and that sort of thing and there’s a number of units here locally that are available smoke-free now and we’d like to see many more,” said McCaslin.
