Student appealing expulsion

WELLS, Minn. – A Minnesota student is looking to get her expulsion overturned.

She claims her punishment for bringing a pocket knife to school is too much. 17-year-old Alyssa Drescher said the small knife was in her purse by mistake.

United South Central in Wells has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to weapons, so the school board voted to expel her for the rest of the year.

She is now taking her appeal to the Minnesota Department of Education.

State Rep. Shannon Savick, DFL-Wells, said she is working to get in touch with the family to show her support and make sure common sense prevails.
