WATERLOO - The NIACC baseball team stayed alive at the NJCAA Region XI tournament with a 7-5 victory over Ellsworth at Riverfront Stadium Saturday afternoon.
NIACC (24-30) received a complete-game performance from freshman right-hander Casey Hall, who scattered seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. It was Hall’s fourth complete game this season, which is tied for third on NIACC’s all-time single-season list.
“We needed a big performance on the mound, somebody who could take us deep and give us a quality start,” NIACC coach Travis Hergert said. “We got beat last night and our message to them was wash it off, shake it off right away.
“In a tournament setting, you have to learn to lose and that’s why it’s double-elimination and if you get good pitching and timely hitting, you can extend yourself in this tournament.”
NIACC plays Iowa Central at 7 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game. Iowa Central stayed alive in the tournament with a 6-1 win over Kirkwood.
NIACC topped Iowa Central 9-6 in the opening round of the regional tournament on Thursday.
In the win over Ellsworth, leadoff hitter Daniel Bradley was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the NIACC offense. Brett Guba and Chad Christensen both had two hits for the Trojans.
Hall (5-3) gave up an unearned run in the first inning, three runs in the fifth inning and a single run in the eighth inning.
“I thought he did a really nice job of commanding the strike zone down,” Hergert said. “He got a lot of ground ball outs.”
Notes – Guba has 100 career hits … Hall has pitched 56 1/3 innings this season, which ranks 11th on NIACC’s single-season list … Bradley has 14 doubles and 58 hits in his freshman season.
