KIMT News 3 – This week we’re highlighting advocates of the Walk MS initiative as they show support for the this weekend’s event.
KIMT is joining our community partners in sponsoring the 2014 Walk MS event to help raise awareness about the disease.
Iowans from all around the state are urged to join other walkers as they raise funds to help support research for a cure.
We spoke to one long-time advocate who says the event is more to educate those willing to learn.
“It’s family and friends getting together and supporting one another and trying to find a cure. We are getting pledges and donating money so that it can go for research to find a cure, so that no one ever has to hear the words ‘you have MS’,” said Kathy Kruger of Manly.
Kathy was first diagnosed more than 30 years ago, and since then has seen a tremendous amount of change in treatments.
She, herself has tried experimental treatments in the past and says she’s seen great improvements. She hopes with events like these, she will see a cause and a cure in her lifetime.
“Finally, after I’ve had it about 10 years, they came up with a new drug and I went on it and it helped tremendously. At that time it helped to slow it down and put me in remission and I’m thankful today. I’m still walking, thinking, talking.Yes I’m very thankful,” said Kruger.
