Early morning accident in Mason City

MASON CITY, Iowa – No serious injuries are being reported after an early morning accident in Mason City. It happened north of NIACC on Thrush Ave near the intersection of B-20.

Authorities on the scene tell KIMT two vehicles were traveling northbound on Thrush Ave, when the second, a red 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix, tried to pass and entered the southbound lane.

However, another vehicle, a silver Toyota Tundra, carrying a trailer was traveling in the southbound lane. The driver of the car claims to have not seen oncoming traffic soon enough.

“What contributed to the accident was the lay of the road here. She was traveling up an upgrade and did not see all the people that were traveling southbound and tried to pass when she shouldn’t,” said Deputy Brent Schupanitz with the Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s Office.

The passing car had to take the shoulder of the road and hit the trailer of the southbound vehicle.

The driver of the car was issued a citation for “Unsafe Passing”.
