GARNER, Ia – One organization is looking to expand but, that idea is not sitting well with some neighbors.
Opportunity Village supports those with mental disabilities by providing services and housing. They are looking at building a home for four of their residents in Garner.
Earlier this week, administrators held a meeting for community members to have some concerns addressed. And it got pretty heated.
Some concerns include safety, decreasing property values, and whether the home would follow the community code that only allows single family homes.
According to Iowa code, it’s allowed.
“A city council or city zoning commission shall consider a home for persons with disabilities a family home,” states John Severtson, Executive Director for Opportunity Village.
Severtson says they are in the process of buying the lot and are moving forward with the project despite these concerns.
