Mayor declares ‘National Safe Boating Week’

Safe Boating

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Memorial Day Weekend is nearing and many will be hitting area lakes to enjoy this weekend’s nice weather.

But, many around the country, including Mayor Ardell Brede and those with the city of Rochester, want you to be safe.

He handed off a declaration with hopes that you take the proper precautions out on the water.

Make sure you are slowing down, being courteous to those around you and, of course, wearing your life jacket.

“I knew growing up that not many people wore their life jackets due to the lack of form fitting back then, but these days they’re more form fitting, they’re easier for canoers and kayakers,” said Greg Opdahl with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

He said you need to make sure you are only going out at night with your boat properly lit.
