Saving a church tower

MASON CITY, Iowa – A local church is looking for help, so they can keep a staple of their congregation standing.

First United Methodist Church’s Tower has been up since 1951. It could be coming down if the stone inside of it is not fixed.

The congregation has formed a capital campaign called the “Saving Our Tower” team.

Leader of the group Richard Lee, says his passion for saving the steeple is one the community can relate to.

“It just seems to me like it’s an important structure in the downtown area.  Its ministry is very important. That’s one reason why I’m involved but, I think the way it serves in general in the community,” said Lee.

Lee says they need to raise more than $300,000.  He says repairs to the tower need to start sometime this summer.
