FREEBORN CO., Minn – Minnesota State Patrol has released the names of the two people killed Wednesday night on Interstate-35. They are James Winnes, 28, of Albert Lea, and Kirt Schmidt, 46, of Owatonna.
UPDATE 10:55 p.m.:
FREEBORN COUNTY, Minn. – We are learning what kind of cars were involved in the Wednesday night wrong-way crash in Freeborn County that killed two. The Minnesota State Patrol says that a 1998 Buick LeSabre and a 1995 Mercury Sable were involved. There was also a 2013 Volvo Tractor listed on the accident report, but it’s not clear what part that semi had in the deadly I-35 crash.
UPDATE 8:03 p.m.:
FREEBORN COUNTY, Minn. – Two people have been killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 35 in southern Minnesota.
Authorities say the crash happened at approximately 6:50 p.m. when a southbound driver in the northbound lanes hit another vehicle head-on. Both vehicles were only occupied by the male drivers. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
So far authorities are not providing any identification regarding those involved. A Minnesota State Patrol Accident Investigator is headed to the scene.
FREEBORN COUNTY, Minn. – Emergency officials are on the scene of a two car accident near the Iowa border, in Freeborn County on Interstate 35. The Minnesota State Patrol, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and the Worth County Sheriff’s Office are all on the scene. It happened near the rest area in Minnesota, directly over the Iowa border. Traffic is being redirected through the rest stop. We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
