MASON CITY, Iowa – Firefighters battled heavy rains and flames Sunday afternoon.
Fire crews responded to the scene of a metal building along Highway 65 in northern Mason City around 4 p.m. The building houses Outdoor Services Inc. Firefighters were stuck battling the blaze during some of the heaviest downpours of the day Sunday and were still able to save the building.
Officials on the scene say the fire may have been sparked by a lightning strike, but there was also a vehicle seen leaving the scene as the fire began. That vehicle is described as a 4-door black Chevrolet S-10 pickup.
The building contains chemicals, but officials say they were able to keep the flames contained to a different portion of the building, and the chemicals were never in danger.
The state fire marshal is coming to the scene to begin an investigation Sunday evening.
