Opportunity Village continues to expand

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa – To sell, or not to sell, that’s the decision that was on the table in Clear Lake earlier this week.

The council voted on whether to sell a few properties. Those properties include three buildings on 3rd St.

After a vote, those lots are approved to sell.

Opportunity Village will be buying 1115 and the north half of 1119 S. 3rd St. The plan is to build a new, 4 person home, for those with disabilities.

Earlier this month, we told you that Opportunity Village is also building similar structures in Garner. Their Service Director says the need for more housing is due to some new regulations.

“According to new guidelines by the Medicaid and Medicare services that provide a major portion of the funding, they’re saying that 8 homes on campus settings are considered segregated and that’s why we have to do that,” says Jim Aberg.

He tells us they are already starting to transition out 7 of the 10 homes in their main Clear Lake hub and those who have already moved are really enjoying living in more residential areas.
