CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Former rivals for the Democratic Party nomination are set to endorse a veteran lawmaker’s campaign to represent northeastern Iowa in Congress.

State Rep. Pat Murphy of Dubuque won a five-way primary on Tuesday in the 1st Congressional District, a seat that four-term Democrat Bruce Braley is vacating to run for Senate.

Murphy received 37 percent of the vote, surpassing the 35 percent threshold needed to avoid a party convention.

Murphy defeated Cedar Rapids city councilwoman Monica Vernon, state Rep. Anesa Kajtazovic of Waterloo, former state Sen. Swati Dandekar of Marion and Cedar Rapids attorney Dave O’Brien.

All four former rivals are set to appear at a Democratic Party office in Cedar Rapids on Friday morning to endorse Murphy.

Murphy faces Dubuque businessman Rod Blum, a Republican, in the general election.
