MASON CITY, Iowa - Local authorities traded their uniforms and squad cars for swimsuits and bikes on Saturday.
It was all for the annual “Running with the Law” triathlon put on by the Mason City Police Department.
The morning kicked off with a 250 meter swim at the Mason City Aquatic Center, followed by a 10 mile bike ride around town, and if that wasn’t enough, the morning finished up with a 3 mile run around Mason City.
Officer, Jason Hugi with the Mason City Police Department, was one of the officials who coordinated the event, and we was also one of the officials participating in the event.
He says this is an event that has been a tradition in town for the past 5 years.
Its goal is to raise money for the department, and because of its success in the past, Hugi says he doesn’t see this tradition dying off any time soon.
“It’s fun!,” he says. “It’s a good way to raise some money, give some prizes out, people can get a workout in and we tried to encourage everybody from beginners to more competitive people relay.”
One of the highlights from the event was when the two officers partnered up and went through all three events together, including the bike portion of the event, which they carried out on a tandem bike.
They called themselves “Team America” and crossed the finish line decked out in red, white, and blue.
Hugi says they usually plan the event for the day before Father’s Day and that they plan to host the triathlon again next year.
