MASON CITY, Iowa – Local citizens wanting to dispose of excess or expired prescriptions now have a more convenient place to take them.
The Mason City Police Department has a new permanent fixture in their lobby. It’s a MedReturn Drug Collection Unit.
They wanted to provide a more accessible and safe location to drop off everything from prescription pills, to vitamins.
One official says he hopes folks will utilize this service because it keeps the community safe on all levels.
“There’s actually been some studies now that are coming up with various concentrations of medications in various water supplies around the country, so we want to keep that from happening and the same thing with the landfill. We don’t want to pollute the grounds or have anybody run across it and try to get a cheap high,” says Captain McKelvey with the Mason City Police Department.
The MedReturn Drug Collection Unit will be available in the lobby during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
