WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Firefighters are crediting a 10-year-old girl with helping save her younger brother from being washed away into a flooded concrete culvert.
Firefighters were called to Bontrager Park around 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
Upon arrival, they found 8-year-old Charlie Cizek of Waterloo, clinging to his sister, Caly, after falling into a flooded concrete intake drain.
Caly says she and her brother were riding bikes in the park and looking at the flood water when Charlie slipped and fell. She jumped off her bike and grabbed his arms as the water pulled at both of them.
Passers-by called 911, a nearby neighbor helped, and first responders were able to safely pull Charlie out of the culvert.
