Pastor pleads guilty to taking money from elderly woman

Court Sign

AUSTIN, Minn. – A southern Minnesota pastor has now pled guilty to swindling over $40,000 from an 83-year-old woman with dementia.  70-year-old David DeFor entered a guilty plea to one count of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult as part of a deal where the prosecution agreed to drop three other counts of the same charge.

Court records say DeFor and his wife allegedly got $11,000 from the woman after DeFor was granted her power of attorney in July 2010.  Austin Church of Christ (Christian), which still lists DeFor as a pastor on its website, received $15,000 from the woman during the same period.  Authorities also say the woman withdrew over $21,000 from her account for other expenses related to DeFor.

A sentencing hearing in this case has been set for August 15th in Mower County court.
