MASON CITY, Iowa – In just under a month, thousands of RAGBRAI riders will be making their way into Mason City, and with that many people coming to local towns, you better believe there’s some serious prep and planning that goes into hosting.
Volunteers, hosts, and RAGBRAI organizers are working hard to make sure everything will be ready in time.
Thursday, we checked in with St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mason City. They’re planning to have about 350 people camping on their grounds when RAGBRAI rolls through.
The church has been working with utility companies to make sure grounds are ready for hundreds of tents.
They’re also planning to have a meal prepared and showers available for the riders. Church organizers say the decision to host riders was an easy one.
“Part of our vision statement is to do just that, to serve the community and our world. We’ve been really trying to focus on that as a congregation. And this kind of just fell out of the sky, it was just like; we need to answer to this,” says Dianna Francis with the church.
She says between folks making food and pies for the dinner and people coming to help the night folks stay here, they have more than 100 volunteers for the event.
