CRESCO, Iowa – Now that it is officially summer, we can also say it’s officially county fair season.
Howard County is one of the first on this season’s docket. From country concerts to educational live bear shows, there’s something for everyone.
When KIMT visited earlier this week, the grounds were packed with people grabbing a bite to eat and lining up for the races.
While some heavy rain put a damper on things, we’re told fair officials are used to that sort of thing.
“A little shower here this afternoon, which we’re always known for. We always get a rain or two during our fair. It will slow our stock car races down by half an hour to an hour tonight, but we’re still going to run our sprint cars and our other classes tonight, and we’ll be doing out country show; Parmalee tomorrow night and Swon Brothers Saturday night,” says Fair Board Secretary Tom Barnes.
It turns out bears don’t like the rain either. Thursday’s big bear show was cancelled. If the weather permits, that show will go on through the 29th.
Barnes also says how the “Mighty” in the Mighty Howard County Fair came about.
“Our Fair Queen said it the other night, the mighty means everybody’s getting together. There’s so much comradery, so much help and we have a great community support, not just from the Cresco Community, but the Howard County community and far beyond. We do a lot of different things here, we are kind of aggressive when it comes to planning with events,’ says Barnes.
The Howard County Fair continues until June 29th. For a full line-up of events follow this link: http://www.mhcfair.com/site/mhcf-entertainment-grandstand.php
