IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City police say they’ve identified a suspect in the vandalism of a Herky statue and expect to file a felony charge.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that police are in the process of contacting the alleged vandal, who is accused of damaging the “Organic Herky” statue located downtown.
Authorities say they won’t release a name until the person is formally charged. The expected charge is second-degree criminal mischief.
Iowa City police officer David Schwindt says the suspect apparently punched agriculture-themed, fiberglass statue, which caused its ankles to crack.
The Iowa City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has removed the statue for repairs, which will cost an estimated $1,300. The statue is one of 83 included in the Herky on Parade displays.
