Teen accused of firing gun in city limits

Mason City Police Department Mason City, Iowa

MASON CITY, Iowa - A Mason City neighborhood was in lock down mode after a gunshot went off in a home this weekend.

Police say a single shot was fired at 645 S. Mississippi Ave.

Nobody was hurt, but officers tell us the 15-year-old responsible for shooting the gun ran from the home, was apprehended and taken into custody on the grounds of discharging a weapon within city limits.

Lt. Ron Vande Weerd with the Mason City Police Department says that even though no one was harmed in the act, it’s a situation they never take lightly.

“You can’t discharge a firearm in city limits,” Vande Weerd explains, “I believe it’s a simple misdemeanor, but there’s no permit for that.”

The name of the teen has not been released.
