MASON CITY, Iowa – A local family is crying out for help in bringing their adopted children home, and their taking the request all the way to D.C.
Six year old Kema and five year old Kahilu are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They’re the newest additions to the Burleson family in Clear Lake, but they’re not in Iowa yet. Laura and her husband legally adopted the two siblings from Congo last July, but now, the Congolese government is not letting any adopted kids leave. For Laura it’s been heartbreaking waiting to find out why.
“It’s had its ups and downs for sure. It’s extremely exciting and we haven’t lost that excitement, but it’s also been pretty disheartening as well,” said Burleson.
Recently Laura and her husband went to Washington to meet with our local senators and congressmen about the issue. They’re hoping they’ll be able to do something to help them get their children home.
