MASON CITY, Iowa – The official RAGBRAI route was announced on Thursday, and the Mason City Police Department is making sure folks are aware of what comes with it. That includes road blocks where riders will be cycling.
“There are places where there’s complete road closures, there’s others where there’s partial road closures, and there’s some where we’re affecting the feeder streets into that. There are many roadways that these bicyclists are coming in on,” says Mason City Police Chief Mike Lashbroook.
He says the community is going to play a major part in maintaining a safe and fun environment. That’s why it’s very important for the community to study these routes and avoid the heavy traffic areas if possible.
These road closings will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 23rd. 12th Street Northwest from Eisenhower to Taft will be fully closed. Westbound vehicle traffic will only be allowed on 12th Street Northwest from Taft to Pierce. Also, only Southbound traffic from 12th Street Northwest to Fourth Street Northwest on Taft, and the downtown will be closed to traffic from Adams East to Delaware to Third Street North to Second Street South.
Lashbrook says it’s also important that motorists be extra cautious on the 23rd of July because these bicyclists will be everywhere.Be ready for some very condensed traffic between 11a.m. and 4p.m. on Wednesday the 23rd, but the good news is, everything will be back to normal by 10a.m. on Thursday.
