ALBERT LEA, Minn. – Last year, the Albert Lea Fire Department applied for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, and recently learned that they got it.
They will receive $145,012 to help them purchase Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBAs).
“The units themselves are just safer. The alarms are better, the monitors are better. The fact that they’re more compact, they’re designed so there’s not a lot of things sticking out, they’re more streamlined,” said Captain Mark Light of the Albert Lea Fire Department.
The next step was getting the council’s approval and they did.
“It benefits everybody, not only us, but if there is somebody that needs us, maybe that extra five or maybe ten minutes we can get out of that is going to make a huge difference,” Light said.
The award requires a cash match of $7,632. That is already covered by the amount budgeted for SCBA replacement.
