BRITT, Iowa – A Facebook contest has changed the life of one north Iowa family.
On Tuesday morning, the Kraus Family was surprised with a generous gift of a $5,000 gift card to Lowes, but this didn’t just come out of the blue.
The Kraus’s came into this prize after entering a contest called, “When a House Becomes a Home,”; a social media contest put on by the Iowa Finance Authority and the Iowa Association of Realtors.
Ben and Becca Kraus say they had no intention of submitting anything into the contest, and that they made the decision at the very last minute.
“We couldn’t even believe it,” Ben says as he looked at his prize and admired his home. “It’s overwhelming, it’s exciting. We have the worst luck, but we won something.”
This generous gift card will not only help them turn their worn down 80s ranch home into the home they have only dreamed of, but it will help take away the financial headache that comes with a major renovation.
Dave Jamison, the executive director of Iowa Finance Authority says he was thrilled to hear the award would be going to a younger couple.
“When a young couple buys a home, that usually means someone else has moved up, and its kind of the start of a spiral in home ownership. That usually has an impact on economic development,” Jamison explains.
From light fixtures, to flooring, faucets and drapes, there is no doubt this renovation will be pouring this new found money back into the community as the Kraus family plans to completely redo their kitchen and bathroom. Now that their financial headache has gone away, their sole focus can be on making this house, a home.
The couple is hoping to be moved in by early August. They tell us that if they have any funds left over on their gift card, the money will go toward building a fence around their yard for their newly adopted dog.
