MASON CITY, Iowa - With the heat we’re expecting for RAGBRAI week, it’s going to be very important for the thousands of riders to stay cool and hydrated. That’s especially true when they are out peddling on hot pavement all day, as it is very easy to become dehydrated.
We spoke with some veteran riders to see if they have any tips to stay hydrated during those long stretches. One says he is sure to have a backup water bottle at all times, just in case that H2O isn’t readily available.
“I ride with two water bottles all the time. The minute one gets empty, I make sure to stop and keep that one filled, so I have at least one full and one partially filled water bottle available at all times,” says veteran rider Gary Herrig.
He says it’s also a good idea, for the longer stretches, to mix in some electrolytes or energy drink mix during the ride.
