Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament- IHSAA Press Release:
A pitcher’s duel featured the Algona Bulldogs and Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors in the Class 3A state quarterfinals Tuesday night at Principal Park. The Warriors scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning and claimed a 2-1 victory.
Cody Selig (9-1) pitched a three-hitter and struck out 13 for second-seeded SBL (25-11).
Weston Shaw (11-1) pitched a five-hitter and struck out 10 for seventh-seeded Algona (27-8).
The Warriors had runners on first and third in the second inning, but Alec Davis struck out, and Bryce Hanson was thrown out after being sent on a double steal attempt to end the inning.
The Bulldogs worked around an error in the third inning to keep Connor Prescott stranded on base, and the game scoreless.
Hanson tripled in the fourth inning, but was unable to score when Connor Schlotfeldt struck out and Cody Selig flew out to right field to end the inning.
The Warriors broke the scoreless tie with two outs in the fifth inning. Prescott and Ryan Admire got on base via walks, and Thomas Wisecup drove Prescott in with a base hit.
Algona responded in the sixth inning, when Tyler Frideres singled to lead off the inning, and later came in from third to score on a wild pitch.
SBL retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth. As Selig grounded out to first, Schlotfeldt advanced to third on the play, and came home to score when Algona attempted to tag him out at third, but the throw sailed into left field.
