MASON CITY, Iowa-A local breast cancer support group is donating over $5,300 to the Mercy Cancer Center.
The group, Buddies for Boobies raises money every June to help breast cancer patients pay for some of the bills that their insurance will not cover.
Leanna Hicks is not only the President of Buddies for Boobies, but also works at Mercy Cheslea Creek. She says that she can see the donations being put to work.
“I have a lady who needs a mastectomy bra, and she other patients can only get one, once a year,” Hicks says. “Her insurance could not cover it, but through donations like ours, and others we were able to get her the bra that she needed.”
Hicks tells us the group started after one of the members had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She says that the member has now recovered. The group started out doing the Relay for Life walks, but they wanted to start their own group to try and help more of the local breast cancer patients.
