MASON CITY, Iowa- In honor of the 50th anniversary of “The Music Man”, the North Iowa Area Community College announces “The Music Man” will be coming back to River City, but with a twist. The new production is called “The Music Man-In Concert”, It’s a story that will give an inside look at what it was like to film the movie from original cast member, Shirley Jones’, point of view. The performance will be rehearsed and premiere in Mason City.
Academy Award winning actress Shirley Jones will be performing with her son, Patrick Cassidy. They joined in the announcement on Wednesday via a Skype phone call to express their enthusiasm in coming to Mason City.
Elizabeth Gales, the Director of NIACC Performing Arts and Leadership Service, says this is going to be a community effort.
“I’m really excited that the members of the Mason City Marching Band, as well as the Mason City Concert Choir, and Stebens Children’s Theatre will be a part of this,” she says. “This is a great opportunity for our youth of Mason City to understand and learn about our history.”
The performance will be held September 18th and 19th. Tickets will go on sale to the public August 21st. The performance will then hit the road for a four-week tour around the Midwest.
