Authorities identify eastern Iowa drowning victim

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified a man who drowned in the Mississippi River as 53-year-old Jerry Thill, of Dubuque.

Authorities say Thill was camping on an island on the Wisconsin side of the river across from Finley’s Landing, north of Dubuque. Thill went into the river around 4:40 p.m. on Friday.

Other men who were camping with Thill, say he was in water up to his chest, when he suddenly appeared distressed and tried to swim. One of the men swam out to try to help Thill, but was not able to keep a strong hold on him. Thill went under the water and did not resurface.

Thill was pronounced dead after authorities brought him to shore in Potosi, Wisconsin.
