MASON CITY, Iowa – A former Forest City police officer will have to wait a few more days to learn if he can get out of jail.
A hearing on the release of 37-year-old Thaddeus Ellenbecker has been moved from August 15 to August 18. It will be held at the Cerro Gordo County Law Enforcement Center.
Ellenbecker was convicted in 2011 of stealing another officer’s rifle and setting fire to the Forest City Police Station. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In May 2014, the Iowa Court of Appeals reversed Ellenbecker’s conviction because it said authorities questioned him in the hospital without advising him of his Miranda rights.
Online court records do not list a new trial date for Ellenbecker and he has filed for his release from custody.
