OWATONNA, Minn – We may be dealing with the full heat of summer, but the Minnesota Department of Transportation is already thinking winter.
Workers are already doing maintenance on snow plows and other winter vehicles.
“It seems like a strange time, but that’s when MnDOT gets started. We’ve already loaded in all of our road salt for the winter. Now we’re doing the prep work on the vehicles, and we’ll have our winter meetings soon,” said MnDOT Spokesperson, Mike Dougherty.
They are also looking to hire more plow drivers. Dougherty said they begin hiring now to allow plenty of training time before hitting the winter roads.
“Once they figure out our main staff, who’s going to be working which routes, they’ll open up and find out the additional drivers that they do need. That’s sort of on an on-call basis. If it’s a winter like last year, they’d probably get a lot of work,” Dougherty said.
They will be taking applications for open positions in our area through September 8.
They are looking for people with a commercial driver’s license and a good driving record.
