AUSTIN, Minn. – A local city is adding a new attraction to their list. On Thursday, the Austin Artworks Center held their grand opening which brought in a good crowd. With more and more communities developing their art scene, we’re looking at the value a venue like this brings to the community.
“The arts always make a community better,” says Co-chair of the project, Gretchen Ramlo.
Which is why she is so excited to have an arts center in Austin.
“I think what’s really wonderful is, three years ago, when we had the artworks festival, it woke up the arts in Austin. It’s always been here, but we realized how much we have,” says Ramlo.
They are taking their arts scene to the next level by opening a center where people can buy and sell art. Not to mention, enjoy it. They’re hoping it will be enjoyed by visitors from all over.
“I think it will bring people to Austin, not only artists that will display here, but of course people will come to look at the art, and buy the art,” says Austin citizen, Alice Holst.
“Art is one of those magical ingredients that really does a lot for the community. It’s an economic development tool, it’s a tourism tool, and it’s an education tool,” says Vision 2020 developer, Laura Helle.
What’s even more important to those who worked on this project though, is providing an arts center for the people of Austin.
“It just enriches the life of the people in the community, no matter how big or small,” says Ramlo.
Based on the community’s response Thursday night, it will do just that.
“I think I’ll probably be here about once a week,” says Holst. Those at Vision 202 say it’s one of the first times the city of Austin has invested in their arts scene. The Austin Artworks Center is located downtown on North Main Street.
