Celebrating local heroes

ROCHESTER, Minn. – They’re people you may see every day, but they don’t always get the recognition they deserve.

A southern Minnesota community is hoping to change that with an event honoring local heroes.

Taking time to meet and thank heroes is what the Local Heroes event in Rochester is all about.

Despite a little rain, hundreds turned out to show their appreciation to past and present military members, law enforcement, and first responders.

This is the 5th year Universal Marine and RV is hosting the Local Heroes event.

Organizers say it’s so important to the community, especially having younger people recognize the sacrifices these local men and women make.

“We do this because we have a passion for honoring these people. Our kids take our freedoms for granted.  We want our children to understand that our freedoms aren’t free. They’re paid with a heavy price,” says David Marquez from Universal Marine and RV.

This year they had a special event involving kids getting to meet officers from the Rochester police.
