Hearing on Barlas future set for Friday

MASON CITY, Iowa – A court hearing will be held Friday afternoon in Cerro Gordo County District Court to determine the future incarceration of Thomas Barlas Jr.

Barlas was found not guilty by reason of insanity by a judge in the stabbing death of his father, Thomas Barlas Sr.  He was sent to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center for a mental health examination.  The report based on that examination is to be used to determine if he will be transferred to a mental health institute, remain in custody of the Department of Corrections, or be released into the community.

According to an order issued Wednesday, the report is complete and the hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.  Barlas will attend via telephone conference call.
