A tough time for Walmart

MASON CITY, Iowa – Individuals involved in a knife fight on Monday evening are linked to another story we have been covering at Walmart.

Police responded to the Days Inn Motel in Mason City Monday night on a report of a heated argument and fight. Authorities arrested Selvin Martinez and Juan Hernandez, and have charged the two with willful injury.

Officials say the most serious injury that came out of the altercation was a stab wound to an unidentified man. We are told he was transported to Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, was treated for his injuries, and was released.

According to police, Martinez and Hernandez were staying at the motel and were part of a construction crew hired by Walmart to carry out repairs on the roof. The roof collapsed late last month, which caused the superstore to close for more than two days.

While you’d think closing a store that is usually open 24 hours a day and seven days a week, would make an impact on business, Betsy Harden, a media relations spokesperson for Walmart says otherwise.

“There was no material impact to the business,” Harden says, “We worked as quickly as we could to get the store back up and running, and we were pleased we were able to reopen as quickly as we did.”

We are told that work will continue on the repairs to the roof, and that the altercation at the Days Inn Motel will not make any impact on the completion of the job.
