PFLAG creates scholarship

MASON CITY, Iowa – A local organization announced their new program to fund a deserving student’s education.  In celebration of North Iowa P-FLAG’s (Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) 10 year anniversary, a scholarship has been created for a student or students who are part of the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) community, and have plans to go to college.  The scholarship is named after Craig Hickok a local LGBT activist.

“We had a terrible time losing him this year. We thought what a great way to remember him by naming the scholarship after a humanitarian who had seen a lot of children grow, a lot of students moving on in education, everything behind it. It was just the perfect time,” said Randy Black, PFLAG Chapter President.

Black says the scholarship is for $500 and applications will be accepted starting in January.
