AUSTIN, Minn. – Getting a child to preschool can be a real challenge for parents, but a local community is looking to help them out.
The United Way of Mower County has a transportation program called “Rainbow Route.” Children can be picked up and dropped off from any of Austin’s preschool locations with buses driven by Southern Minnesota Area Rural Transit (SMART).
More than 90 students are taking part so far.
“We have found that getting kids to preschool is a real barrier for families in our community. You’re either working, don’t have the means to get there, or maybe they’re at a daycare,” said United Way of Mower County Executive Director, Diane Baker.
She said 25 kids are currently on a waiting list. They are hoping to add another bus and route to solve that issue.
