MASON CITY, Iowa – September is National Hunger Action Month. This is a reminder of the over 800 million people that go hungry every day. Athletes from one local school district are taking this month quite literally, and taking action.
From September 4th to the 12th, Mowawks from the Mason City School District are out collecting food items for the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. On Thursday evening, during the first swim meet, they held their first drive and “Crammed the Canoe.”
One organizer tells us it’s their way of helping the community and teaching students a lesson along the way.
“It’s just a way of them realizing that there are people that go hungry every day. They get the good feeling about themselves, and about our school and what we can do to help others. It also helps the community to see that you know there are good kids out there and we’re doing things to help the community,” says organizer, CarolAnn Eppens.
On Saturday, keep an eye out for trucks at Mason City Hy-Vee stores and Fareway as students “Pack the Pickups.”
