Police warn Mason City area of fake IRS calls

MASON CITY, Iowa- Mason City Police are warning people in Cerro Gordo County about phone calls coming from an unknown phone number claiming to work for the IRS.

Authorities say the caller is telling residents that that they work for the IRS and are issuing arrest warrants for tax evasion.

Mason City Police say that the IRS do not work in this manner. Heather Han, the Mason City Communications Supervisor says that you need to double check with your company to see if there is an issue with your accounts rather than to believe someone calling from over the phone.

“Anytime you get a phone call that comes to you, don’t assume they are who they say they are,” Han says.   “Don’t ever give out personal information.” Obviously they are probably going to have your name already, they might even have a little bit of personal information about you, but that doesn’t mean they are who they say they are.

Han also says that she wants to warn the people in the area of this situation so that they can keep their personal information safe.
