MOWER COUNTY, Minn. – Several animals were killed in a barn fire early Thursday morning.
The Austin Fire Department was called to the scene north of Austin on Highway 218 just after 5 a.m. They arrived to find the barn fully engulfed and the roof was about to collapse.
Authorities say the blaze killed three sows, three sets of piglets, and one calf. Several other animals were able to escape.
Austin Fire Chief Jim McCoy said getting water to the rural scene was one of the challenges.
“We shuttled water. We asked for mutual aid and received it from Brownsdale,” McCoy said, “They sent us some tankers and helped us shuttle water from the nearest hydrant.”
The barn was destroyed and a pickup truck parked next to it suffered damage. All together, it is estimated at around $50,000.
The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
