Sports complex work takes another step forward

AUSTIN, Minn. – Plans to replace two grass fields with artificial turf and add a dome to the Wescott Athletic Complex are moving forward.

On Monday’s special Austin School Board meeting agenda, there were two requests for approval. One was for site bids, which outlines prepping the fields for turf, and the other was for construction bids on projects like, creating additional parking and weatherization of the concession building so it can be used year-round.

After hearing recommendations from Austin Public Schools Director of Buildings and Grounds, Mat Miller, board members unanimously approved the site bids, but tabled construction bids until April’s meeting.

“We only had one bidder on the project, so we want to make sure we do our due diligence to make sure we’re accepting a good bid and I’m just asking for them to table it until the April board meeting to give me another two or three weeks to just analyze the numbers and make sure I’m comfortable with the recommendation,” Miller said.

He said they are still planning to have shovels in the dirt on May 1, and plan to have renovations completed before the fall sports season opens.
