MASON CITY, Iowa -Learning to communicate is key for some local law enforcement, especially if the situation is escalating.
Mason City Police Officers are receiving training to make sure intense situations don’t escalate. Lieutenant Frank Stearns says a lot of times situations can be handled by just talking. He says force is rarely used. Stearns says they’re being taught that explaining why you’ve been pulled over or why the police have been called is vital.
“Right now most things can be handled verbally, give people options. We need to explain what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and give them options on this is how we’re going to do it. Hopefully you’ll cooperate with me, it will go smoothly, keep us talking,” Lt. Stearns said.
Stearns says they’re taught each call is a new call, so bringing any stress into the situation from a previous one isn’t an option. Officers will be trained on these procedures over the next two weeks.
