FOREST CITY, Iowa- The new Winnebago Safety Center is currently under construction and there are plans for new additions.
The county Board of Supervisors voted to add two more cell pods last week. The facility was going to house 24 inmates, but will now house 40.
Winnebago County Sheriff Dave Peterson said the new pods cost an additional $130,000. The Board of Supervisors voted to add two more cell pods last week but the bid is under budget and won’t affect taxes.
Peterson said the jail population continues to increase and the additional cells will provide more room for different categories of people.
“We can’t have males and females together, we can’t have felons with misdemeanants together, sentenced people with non-sentenced people,” said Peterson.
The new safety center is projected to be ready by February.
