MASON CITY, Iowa – One 16-year-old is in critical condition, and another has been transferred after a rollover crash Saturday.
According to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at 5:45 p.m. on 300th Street near Jonquil Avenue, when Drew Brown, of Lelan, lost control of the pickup he was driving, and struck a bridge structure. The truck rolled, and he and a passenger, William Kirschbaum, were trapped inside.
First responders used the Jaws of Life to free the boys, and took both to Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. On Sunday afternoon, a spokesperson said Brown is in critical condition, and Kirschbaum has been treated and transferred to an unknown facility in an unknown condition.
Authorities say both teens were wearing seat belts.
CERRO GORDO COUNTY, Iowa – An accident northeast of Clear Lake shut down 300th Street on Saturday afternoon.
Law enforcement responded to the 9000 block of 300th Street about 5:45 pm. They say a truck driven by 16-year-old Drew Brown of Leland was headed east on 300th Street when it struck the bridge. The truck rolled into the ditch, trapping Brown and 16-year-old passenger William Kirschbaum.
The jaws of life were used to extricate the two boys. Brown was transported to the hospital by ambulance and Kirschbaum was taken by Mercy Air Med to the hospital.
B20 was shut down in both directions and traffic was rerouted so the helicopter could land.
The accident remains under investigation with charges pending.
